To convert HEIC to JPG on a Mac without losing the original, export a new JPEG copy from Preview or Photos and save it to a separate delivery folder. Keep the HEIC where it is; it is the smaller master file, while the JPG is the compatibility copy for an upload form, older app, or Windows recipient.

Keep the HEIC, deliver the JPG

HEIC is not a broken photo. Apple says HEIF uses less storage than JPEG while preserving the same visual quality, and macOS High Sierra 10.13 and later can view and edit it. The conversion is for the receiving system, not a cleanup job for your library. Apple’s HEIF support notes make the same split: export a different format when you need it.

Make one folder beside the job, such as JPG for upload, and put only delivery copies there. That small bit of housekeeping matters when a client asks for the original later, or when an Etsy seller needs the JPG for a listing but wants the iPhone capture available for a future crop. Keep the filename stem, then add -jpg if the folder might mix formats (which makes the handoff folder readable at a glance).

My recommendation is blunt: don’t convert the entire library because one website rejected one file. Create the JPGs that have a destination. The trade-off is a second copy to manage, but it beats replacing an efficient HEIC master with a format you only needed for one form.

Preview for one file or a small folder

Preview is the native first stop when the HEIC files are already in Finder. Open the file, choose File > Export, select JPEG in Format, give the output a new name or location, and save. Apple’s Preview instructions confirm that JPEG is one of the export formats and that its quality can be adjusted.

  1. In Finder, duplicate nothing. Open the HEIC in Preview.
  2. Choose File > Export.
  3. Set Format to JPEG and adjust the quality only if the destination has a file-size limit.
  4. Save into JPG for upload, with a name you can recognize later.
  5. Open the saved JPG once, then upload that copy.

Preview also handles a modest batch: open the images in one window, select them in the sidebar, then use the same export path. It’s a good fit for 3 or 12 event photos. Once the folder is large enough that naming and checking each output becomes the slow part, use Photos or a batch converter instead.

If the form rejects the result, inspect the file extension in Finder before doing any more editing. A .jpg suffix on a genuinely exported JPEG is useful evidence; renaming a .heic file to .jpg is only a new label, not a conversion.

Photos for library batches

Photos is the cleaner native route when the images live in the Photos library rather than a Finder folder. Select the pictures, choose File > Export > Export [number] Photos, then choose JPEG as the Photo Kind. Apple says JPEG exports are suited to websites and other photo apps, and its Photos export guide also lets you set size, JPEG quality, filenames, and subfolders.

That menu has an easily missed fork. Export [number] Photos creates a selected-format delivery copy. Export Unmodified Original preserves the source format instead. Choose the first one when a portal needs JPG; choose the second only when someone asked for the original HEIC. The labels are close enough to trip up a rushed handoff.

For a folder going to a Windows collaborator, Windows route covers the receiving side. If the images will become a document rather than individual uploads, use the PDF route after you settle on the delivery format. You’re making a delivery copy here (not a new master).

Browser conversion when the output workflow changes

Native export wins for a few files because it keeps the job inside macOS. A browser tool earns its place when a mixed folder contains HEIC, JPG, PNG, and WebP, or when you need the same output routine from a Mac and a Windows machine. The browser route is not automatically better. You lose the convenience of Photos library selection, and it adds another handoff to check. When the source is only HEIC and the Mac is right there, Preview is less fussy.

JPEG handoff checks

Before sending a JPG, check the thing the recipient will actually use. Open the new file in Preview, confirm the extension in Finder, and make sure you chose the version with the intended crop and edits. A JPEG copy does not rescue a too-small image, nor does it fix a portal that wants a specific pixel box.

If the upload gives a dimension error, follow the exact-pixel resize guide on the JPG copy, not the HEIC master. If the error is about file weight, compress the finished JPGs after conversion. And if the form accepts the format but wants a different canvas, resize the delivery copy instead of stretching the original. That’s the point where a converted file becomes a delivery file rather than a random duplicate.

For a handful of files, Preview is the boring winner: export a JPEG into a named folder, upload it, and leave the HEIC master alone. For a Photos-library batch, use the selected-format export, not the similarly named original-export command.
